The Buncefield Aviation Storage facility was the fifth largest oil-products storage depot in the UK, with a capacity of approximately 60,000,000 gallons of fuel which equated to around 8% of UK oil storage capacity.

Scope of Works

Enerveo's involvement included the installation of the site wide HV network and transformers (3.3kV & 11kV) and all the associated pumping terminal and control facilities. 

The design was completed by BPA with Enerveo assisting with the site run design for the containment systems and the selection of field junction boxes. 

The work scope included (but was not limited to) the following activities: 

 

  • Fire and Gas 
  • Power and Control
  • High voltage cabling, termination and testing 
  • Fibre optic and data communication
  • Intrinsically safe, Exe ans Exd systems
  • Earthing network
  • Road lighting and site-wide lighting
  • Cable containment systems
  • Instrument small bore tubing
  • Pressure testing
  • Cable testing
  • Energisation testing
  • ATEX inspection
  • QA Handover dossiers

Added Value

A collaborative working style of contract ensured all parties were focused on achieving the project objectives, with Enerveo working closely with the BPA engineering and commissioning team to ensure system completion was achieved for first-fuel and all subsequent milestones.

Key Facts

The project achieved electrical completion in November 2018, with excellent safety standards achieved throughout the construction and commissioning phases. The new facilities have been built to the highest safety and environmental standards and have re-instated the Buncefield Terminal to its strategic role of supplying aviation fuel to Heathrow and Gatwick airports.
