Cullan Buckley - Highways Electrical Apprentice
We caught up Cullan, who is an apprentice on our Highways Electrical Apprenticeship Scheme in Merseyside, to find out how his apprenticeship has been panning out so far.
What made you choose Enerveo for your apprenticeship?
I have an electrical background from college, and when I became aware of the opportunity in highways it stood out as something different and unique. It really caught my interest.
Why did you decide on an apprenticeship instead of university or another path?
Before this, I was working as a skilled labourer, but I wanted to gain additional skills. An apprenticeship allows you to learn as you go while earning at the same time. Highways is a unique sector, and this role offers valuable experience that you wouldn't get elsewhere.
How have your first few months been? Has the role been what you expected so far?
Every job has been a surprise - not necessarily what I expected, but in a good way! I’m really enjoying it, learning a lot, and picking up different aspects of the job. It’s exciting to be driven by gaining new skills.
What have you enjoyed the most about your apprenticeship so far?
I enjoy the variety of the job and how hands-on it is. Every day is different, and I’m constantly learning something new.
Have there been any challenges, and if so, how have you overcome them?
Working with cable joints on private networks has been challenging, as I've never seen it before! Luckily, the team showed me step-by-step how to do it, and they taught me well. Now, I feel much more confident.
What’s something new or surprising you’ve learned since starting?
Just how much work goes into street lighting and the wider electrical infrastructure. It’s something you don’t really think about until you’re involved in it, and there’s so much more to it than I initially expected.
How have your colleagues and mentors supported you in your journey?
The support has been great. Everyone takes the time to answer questions and explain things properly. If I ever need help, someone is always there to sit down and go through it with me. It makes a big difference to my confidence.
Do you feel like the training has been useful and relevant to your role?
Absolutely. Everything I’ve learned so far has been directly applicable to the job, and I feel like I’m developing useful skills every day.
Where do you see your career going after completing the apprenticeship?
I want to keep progressing and developing my skills. I’m looking forward to completing my apprenticeship and seeing where it takes me.
What are you most excited about in your career at Enerveo?
I’m excited to finish my apprenticeship and continue working here for as long as possible. There are so many opportunities to grow and learn.
What advice would you give someone considering an apprenticeship at Enerveo?
Go for it! It’s a great opportunity to learn, gain hands-on experience, and earn while you do it
What’s one thing you’d tell your past self about starting this apprenticeship?
Start earlier! I wish I had done this sooner.
Is there anything else you’d like to share about your experience so far?
There is plenty of support within the business and the department, and the team relationships are really strong. The classroom learning and the need to stay away from home for training has been tough, but once you’re there, it’s a great experience.
